Ellie Dixon

Average rating of 0 out of 5 stars

Alt Pop Production Techniques
2-time winner of the NMG Best Female Solo Award Ellie Dixon has been featured on BBC 6 Music, ITV News and Glamour Magazine YouTube Channel. With recent singles garnering hundreds of thousands of plays on Spotify and social media channels blowing up, her ability to make Alternative Pop that captures the minds and hearts of the masses is undeniable! On this course, Ellie takes you through the main steps to producing a magical Indie Pop chorus from scratch. The course starts by putting together the main hook and beats, to establish the foundations of the track, before a bassline is created by combining guitar with a synthesized layer from Logic’s Sculpture. The beats are then bolstered and processed with various effects to fatten up the groove. Following this, Ellie incorporates percussion sounds from multiple objects in her immediate environment, to add quirky rhythms and identifiable textures into the track. Once the basic architecture of the chorus is in place, various melodic elements are incorporated using instruments in the DAW. These include electric and grand pianos, as well as a bell sound, which is shaped with effects and woven into a retro pop leadline. Parts are played in using a MIDI keyboard and some are bounced to audio so that additional editing and more precise arranging can be carried out. The final 3-part module sees Ellie constructing each vocal track, beginning with the main vocal and then adding layer after layer of additional harmonies, using doubling and panning techniques to fill out the sound. Each part is edited and processed with effects to form a unified sound and sit comfortably in the mix. Signing up to the course gets immediate access to the 2.5 hours of streamed tutorials, plus the project from the lessons and a bonus pack of Indie Pop samples from Loopmasters. Check out the sample module before signing up for an example of the course content and Ellie’s inspirational teaching style.

Beginner's Guide to Synthesis
With the huge range of synthesisers available today, comprising both DAW factory instruments and 3rd party synth plugins, a knowledge of how to use them is an essential part of modern production. This course aims to give you all of the fundamental skills and confidence to tackle sound design with any synthesiser with ease, to enable easier patch editing and creation of your own presets from scratch. The tutorials work through all of the main sections of a synth, including oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, arpeggiators and more, explaining the function and control set of each one. To make the course as universal as possible, a wide range of synths are featured in the tutorials, with many of the most popular synth plugins and DAW built-in instruments shown. The tutorials are punctuated with white board demonstrations, to help convey the main synthesising principles, combined with numerous examples of patch creation every step of the way. Students will learn how much can be done with relatively little on a synth, whilst also absorbing a wealth of techniques that will provide a solid foundation for designing many different types of sound. Although the course is primarily aimed at beginners, due to the technical nature of sound design, the level is mostly intermediate with an occasional foray into more advanced territory in one or two places! Signing up to the course provides immediate access to 3 hours of streamed tutorials, as well as an included assessment, to provide some interactive feedback on students’ synthesising knowledge. As with all Producertech courses, free sample module(s) are available to enable viewing of excerpts before signing up, for an example of the course style and content, which will have you mastering synthesis in no time!

Building a House Anthem - Reconstructing 'Maasai'
Called 'New Names to Watch' by Pete Tong earlier in the year, OC & Verde have become firmly in the limelight of the House scene, with their recent productions smashing the charts and receiving praise and support from a long list of A-list DJs. In this set of tutorials, the pair reconstruct one of their best known tracks, 'Maasai', which spent several weeks at number 1 on Beatport and lead to a host of DJ gigs around the world. As the tutorials progress, they lay down more and more of the core elements, explaining the thought processes and methodology behind each one, as well as any mixing considerations. After a basic drop and breakdown are formed, they start to build the arrangement, embellishing it with additional melodic sounds and FX as they go, showing the art to maintaining the energy and interest required to keep the dancefloor going. The remaining lessons then explain in detail how the different sections of the track were constructed, to demonstrate how each part develops throughout the song and ensure a DJ has the devastating drops they need! As well as the streamed tutorials, the course comes with MIDI files of the main melodic and rhythmic sounds that can be dragged into any music software, as well as 150MB of bonus house samples, so there are plenty of materials for students to play with. Before signing up, check out the sample modules on the course page for an example of the course content, and listen to 'Maasai' to hear the track that the pair recreate.

Classic House Production and Sound Design
Maison Records owner Ian Bland returns to Producertech to deliver another course on constructing a classic house track from scratch, this time in Logic Pro. Using almost exclusively Logic’s built-in instruments and effects, Ian shows how to design bass grooves, leads, pads, vocals and more, then arrange and mix them into a professional-sounding track. The completed track, ‘Living for the Moment’, which has now been released on Rebel Eye under his alias Dancing Divaz, is supplied with the course in mastered and pre-mastered format. Ian also goes under aliases Hollywood Hills, Quake, Dejure, Blandy and many others, releasing on a host of popular labels, as well as his own label Maison Records. His impressive discography includes remixes for Queen and Prince, and dates right back to his formation of legendary rave outfit Dream Frequency in 1990! On the course, Ian shows how to design and sequence every one of the musical parts, including grooving bass, stabbed synth and organ chords, sustained strings and vocals, using Logic’s EXS24, ES2, Alchemy, B3 and Retro Synth. This allows students to see how each part of a house track can be created from the ground up, without relying heavily on samples. Once all parts have been produced, Ian then builds his arrangement, spending a decent amount of time on each section, so you’ll learn how to maintain continuity and interest throughout the track. Finally, levels are balanced and effects applied, to ensure the end result is comparable to other professional releases in the genre. Signing up to the course gets you instant 24/7 access to over 5-hours of tutorials, for as long as you need, plus all the Logic projects from the course and a 100MB bonus pack of house samples from Loopmasters. Future Beats & Soul Production Techniques
UK Producer El. Train has been making big waves in the Future Beats scene in recent years, with his fusion of Hip Hop, Soul, RnB and Trap landing him releases on labels like Kitsuné, Darker than Wax and Jakarta Records. On this course, he shows how to build up a quality arrangement from scratch using samples from his Loopmasters pack and working mainly with factory instruments and effects in Logic Pro, with all techniques being easily transferrable over to other DAWs. Starting with the beats, El. Train layers up various percussion sounds, sequenced using Maschine, to get his initial groove worked out. He then lays down the main chords hook, which is complemented by a subby bassline, to form the primary melodic elements of the track. A syncopated kick and snare break is then woven with the melodies to finish off the groove. El. Train then imports an acappella into Serato Sample, which he uses to slice up the vocal and create interesting chops and phrases that are sporadically sequenced into the arrangement. After processing the vocal, he starts building the song, constructing the intro, main body and outro. He ends the course with some final tips on working with bass and inverting chords to make flowing harmonies. Signing up gets you immediate access to the streamed tutorials, plus the project from the course and a bonus pack of samples from Loopmasters. Check out the sample module before signing up for an example of El. Train’s laid back and informative style, imparting valuable techniques and inspiration to kick start your own Future Beats & Soul production journey.

Groove Fundamentals
Groove is a ubiquitous term in music production, appearing on hardware like drum machines, within editors in DAWs and on many software instruments too, but what is it actually referring to? This course answers this very question, with a detailed exploration of groove handling within a range of different applications, to help you become a master of the groove! Most people tend to think of groove when producing beats, as it’s a parameter most commonly found when creating rhythmic patterns like drums. As such, the lessons begin by explaining the most popular forms of groove, which are 1/8- and 1/16- note swing. This is done through the creation of a classic jazz cymbal pattern at full and half speeds. After some initial theory is covered, the next module shows how that theory applies when making House beats, as more syncopated percussion is combined with the main drums. This is developed further as rhythmic melodies like basslines and arps are added into the mix, which need a similar treatment when it comes to groove, to ensure all sounds are working together. Another module looks at manual groove handling, showing how loop timing can be adjusted through audio warping and regular editing, so that a consistent groove is achieved. The last module demonstrates the ways groove is handled in 2 popular DAWs, Logic Pro and Ableton Live, with the latter being investigated further in a subsequent lesson to show more unique features like groove extraction, randomisation and volume modulation. Enrolling on the course provides instant access to over 90 minutes of tutorials, as well as the software projects and written notes from the lessons, so sign up now to firm up your production knowledge and start making tight grooves today!
